What Is Trade Assurance?
Trade Assurance is Alibaba's free service ensuring secure transactions. Suppliers displaying the Trade Assurance icon have committed to fulfillment standards. Buyers receive recourse if delivery deadlines are missed or agreed conditions aren't met.
What It Covers
- Product quality refunds — for items not meeting contractual standards
- On-time delivery guarantees — refund eligibility for late shipments
- Secure payment methods — Mastercard, Visa, e-checking, telegraphic transfers via platform
What It Does NOT Cover
- Sophisticated bait-and-switch where defects are hard to prove
- Disputes where contracts lack clear quality specifications
- Issues arising after buyer confirms receipt
- Problems with orders placed outside the platform
- Intellectual property theft
The Dispute Resolution Process
- Initiate dispute after payment completion
- Provide documentation (photos, inspection reports, contracts)
- Negotiate directly with supplier through platform
- If negotiation fails, apply for refund with comprehensive evidence
- Alibaba mediates and makes final determination
Why Legal Backup Is Essential
Trade Assurance addresses basic quality and delivery failures. But for serious matters — significant financial losses, IP theft, systematic fraud — you need:
- Enforceable contracts with Chinese jurisdiction clauses
- Factory verification before placing orders (not after)
- NNN agreements protecting your designs and customer relationships
- Clear quality specifications that Alibaba can actually enforce
Best Practices
- Only purchase from Trade Assurance suppliers — never go off-platform
- Write detailed product specifications into the order — make the contract enforceable
- Use platform payment only — direct bank transfers have no protection
- Document everything — photos, messages, inspection reports
- Engage a lawyer for large orders — the cost is minimal compared to potential losses
